The Medal was founded by a Decree on 13 December 1950.
It was awarded to workers for their notable achievements in the economic or public life of the country.

it has the form of a circle with diameter of 32 mm.
The averse features a man and a woman, holding a sickle and a hammer crossed in their the uplifted hands with a five-pointed star in the background and with a gear-wheel and wheat-ears in their the others hands, at the top - a semi-circular inscription: "ЗА ТРУДОВО ОТЛИЧИЕ".
In the centre of field on the reverse is a gear-wheel housing in its inside the convex effigy of a tractor and a tractor-driver woman.
The Medal was worn on a pentagon bearer dressed in red ribbon bordered in white on both ends.
It was mint in the State Mint, Sofia. The Medal was cancelled in 1991.
