As a poet he was the forerunner of the parnassianism, and one of the representatives of Romanticism in Colombia. His poem "La Luna" (the moon) was classified as one of the most influential of the nineteenth century, according to the Colombian Academy of Language. He was a member and founder of the Colombian Society of Engineers.
